Maximizers vs. "satisficers"

This article about the search for better quality of life out of the Bay Area reminded me of the reason why I tend to move around looking for new places.

According to the article, the need for better quality should be balanced against what one really loses leaving a big urban environment to settle in a more provincial one.

Back to (Summer) School in Pisa

Update: I spent 3 great weeks in Pisa working on an interesting project: "A social network of cellular automata". Here I present the project to Stephen Wolfram:

And this is a nice CA rule.

3k r1 Cellular Automaton

I'll spend the next 3 weeks in Pisa, Italy, attending the "A New Kind of Science" Summer School.

Back to Milan

I had a great time in SF, and now I am back to Milan. A few days here and then I'll be at the AlifeXI conference in the UK.

New life

A year ago I sold Tipic Inc., the company that created the largest blogging and community platform in Italy. Now Splinder is handed over and has doubled in users since the sale.

I am now free to go after my interests which are, broadly speaking, Bio Inspired Artificial Intelligence and Neuroscience. I would like to meet researchers who are actively working in these fields.

Splinder was born when I met a researcher at a center in Italy, who was working on ideas similar to mine. I believe that in Europe we have a lot of research from which companies can be developed, so if you are working on Bio Inspired AI, or know of someone who is, feel free to contact me.

Not an easy flight

I finally got to NYC at 10:00 pm local time, 6 hours late on a 5 hours flight, not bad!

We left San Francisco at 8:00 am, but over Chicago, we started flying in circles, and after a few minutes the captain announced that the FAA was not allowing us to approach NYC for bad weather and lack of air slots.

We landed in Chicago, were not allowed out of the plane, because every 30 min we were waiting for the go ahead. Spent 4 hours sitting in a idle plane :-(

40 miles

The last 2 weeks in the Bay Area have been really productive. The quality and quantity of people that I met is really impressive.

I like technology, so I guess that's the place where it makes sense to be for me. The reality, though, is that it is not just about technology, but also about vision and being able to discuss about the future without limits, either cultural, ideological, or you name it. Not everybody here is this way, but some are, and that's what counts in the end.

SV 101

Yesterday Shel gave me the first lesson of "Silicon Valley 101" :-)

He was a great host taking me around Palo Alto and Stanford. As usual we had a great conversation about many subjects: cultural diversities, social media, the economy, life, etc ...

He also wrote an interesting post about how blogging and social media allowed him to get in touch with the world.

Making fun of Web 2.0

I'll be there tomorrow in San Francisco.

NYC

I am spending a few days in NYC, visiting old friends and enjoying NY City life. Saturday I'll be flying to Vancouver; never been there, looking forward to get there.

Synthetic Biology 3.0

Tomorrow I'll be in Zurich attending the Synthetic Biology 3.0 conference.

I have not finished reading the Cell Biology book, so I might not understand much, but gotta start somewhere, and I thought a few days in Zurich would not be so bad after all, since in Milan it is very hot now.

Moderator

The roster of participants is really impressive. We will meet in Rome on June 14th, for the first meeting of the First Generation Network.

I will be moderating a panel. It will be interesting because all the participants are entrepreneurs, some of them working for institutions now.

BAIA

BAIA is the Business Association Italy America. They are based in Silicon Valley and help Italian Entrepreneurs with contacts and opportunities in the Valley.

Franco Folini from BAIA interviewed me a few days ago. The interview is online.

Referrers

This blog gets a few referrals per day from this blog. It is a list a some blogs opened by McKinsey Alumni.

Reading

Reading about physics, biology, nanotechnology and AI is very refreshing. After 5 years spent concentrating on community building, blogs, IM and the WEB in general, I am taking my time to understand the big picture. So many things have changed in 5 years, and so many different fields are coming together. I feel there are opportunities ahead for those who understand the evolution of all these technologies.

Let's restart from here.

Everytime I start a new site or a new blog, or both, it is great; I feel free to do or write whatever I want. Today is no different!
